Towards the end of last year, I travelled to Puerto Rico, a beautiful Caribbean island. After spending a good amount of time there, I can confidently say it offers the perfect balance of stunning beaches and exceptional food. From laid-back breakfast cafés to comforting lunch spots and atmospheric dinners, food quickly became a central part of the experience. With no shortage of places to eat at any time of day, it was easy to explore a new area and discover a different spot each day.

Breakfast Spots Worth Visiting
Starting with breakfast, there were a few places I would definitely recommend based on the food, value for money and overall atmosphere.

El Horno de Pane
If you want to experience fresh bakery items in Puerto Rico, El Horno de Pane is a must. Located in Hato Rey, it’s probably easier to get to by car or Uber but it’s absolutely worth the journey.
This was one of those places I had to visit more than once because it was just that good. It’s open from 7am until 2:30pm, so the earlier you arrive, the better, as queues can get pretty long.
There is only indoor seating but the turnover is fairly quick and I always managed to find a table.
The pastry selection here was one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Everything is baked fresh on-site which really elevates the experience from the incredible bakery aroma to the quality of the food itself. On top of that, everything was very reasonably priced. If I return to Puerto Rico this will be one of the first places I visit again.

Café Regina
Located in Santurce, Café Regina is very easy to reach on foot or by Uber if you’re staying in the area.
The café offers a lovely mix of savoury and sweet options, including what felt like homemade cakes.
I ordered their orange cake and immediately felt like I needed a second slice (it was that good).
I also tried their sourdough toast with cream cheese and salmon and while it sounds simple, it was genuinely one of the best versions of this combination I have ever had (and I have had many). This spot is definitely a must-try if you’re in the area. You also don’t need a reservation but as it’s quite popular, I would recommend arriving early to secure a table.
Tostado
Another breakfast spot I really enjoyed was Tostado. There were two locations in the area but the one we visited was also in Santurce and was easier to get to and slightly larger than the other.
The atmosphere here was very relaxed with both indoor and outdoor seating.
I ordered the cream cheese and salmon again (clearly a theme), alongside some French toast.
One thing I noticed throughout Puerto Rico is just how generous they are with meal portions, especially when it comes to salmon and cream cheese but, the food was again delicious, filling and very satisfying.
Because this location was larger, we didn’t need to wait to be seated and no reservation was required. Service was also smooth and efficient with minimal waiting time.

Abracadabra
Abracadabra truly deserves recognition for how delicious and filling their French toast was. Also in the Santurce neighbourhood, this spot is easy to access and offers a wide range of breakfast options.
I ordered the French toast and once again, the portion size did not disappoint. While I managed to finish the plate, I definitely needed a few hours before thinking about my next meal. The restaurant itself is spacious and beautifully decorated both inside and out, which really added to the overall experience.

Loiza Street
This spot is located near Playa Ocean Park in Santurce and it was roughly a 15 minute walk from the beach. After spending some time by the sea, we strolled over for breakfast which felt like the perfect plan.
The café offers both indoor and outdoor seating and the food was excellent. I ordered French toast again but this time topped with guava jam (something I hadn’t tried before) and it was really delicious.
Although I struggled to finish my plate, it’s definitely a place I would revisit if I travelled to that beach area again. The service was efficient and the staff were warm, joyful and polite which added to the overall experience.
Lunch & Dinner Spots
The lunch and dinner options were just as memorable as the breakfast options.
La Casita Blanca
La Casita Blanca was a popular lunch spot (also in the Santurce neighbourhood) that I had to try partly because social media claims it’s one of Bad Bunny’s favourite restaurants.
As expected, there was a queue and we did have to wait for a while but it was worth it.
Everything we ordered felt homemade and comforting, from the fresh piña coladas to my main dish of rice, shrimp and a hearty bean casserole. Once again, the portions were generous and while I just about finished my plate, the food felt nourishing and familiar, just like a home-cooked family meal. The staff were attentive and welcoming, making this another place I’d happily return to.

Casita Miramar
Casita Miramar is part of the same restaurant group as La Casita Blanca and is located in Santurce near Condado Beach.
This was an ideal spot for dinner, particularly because of its warm atmosphere and relaxed ambience.
While the main course was excellent, the real highlight of the evening was their coconut milk cake. I can’t put into words how good it was but if I could somehow learn to make it myself, best believe that I would.

La Vergüenza
Lastly, La Vergüenza was a place I kept seeing on social media but hadn’t considering until the end of my trip. From the starters to the mains and sides, everything was cooked to perfection.
I couldn’t decide whether it was the fish tacos or the queso frito (cheese squares) that won me over, but either way, this spot quickly became a favourite. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a casual but high-quality meal while exploring the Condado Beach area.
The restaurant itself is spacious with both downstairs and upstairs seating and I can’t finish without mentioning the many Bad Bunny photos decorating the corridors which added character to the space.

Final Thoughts
Puerto Rico completely exceeded my expectations when it came to food. Every meal felt thoughtful, generous and full of flavour and the warmth of the people made each experience even better. Whether you’re someone who plans their trips around food or simply enjoys discovering good places as you go, Puerto Rico offers something special.
If you’re planning a visit, I’d strongly recommend leaving room in your itinerary to explore different areas and beaches and take your time with meals, it’s all part of what makes the experience so memorable!
